For the second consecutive year, el Chico opens Adentro/Afuera, an exhibition dedicated to graduates of various degrees and masters in Fine Arts. One of el Chico's interests focuses on the formation of a solid artistic community, not only from the field of artists but also from other equally important agents within the cultural landscape such as academic and private institutions and galleries. Adentro/Afuera arises from the investigation into the essential elements that create an artistic ecosystem and therefore a cultural one in a city like Madrid. The intention is to eventually expand this concept to the rest of the country.

After el Chico’s 2021 collaboration with several Andalusian artists (Abel García, Pepe
Dominguez and Irene Anguita, the latter selected for the first edition of this exhibition), we were interested in the cross pollination of the different academic models from the Faculties of Fine Arts of Seville and Madrid; thanks to the support of both institutions, we have been able to achieve this open call in which we have selected nine artists.

The selection has been based not only on artistic and/or aesthetic criteria but also on other aspects emphasising the academic training of the selected graduates with the potential of each selected artist also of great interest for the final choices. Adentro/Afuera is not interested in becoming a mine for emerging artists, however, we are aware of the role it can play in exposing early-career artists to a broader audience. Adentro/Afuera is a postacademic exercise in which we want to assist artists –both those who are part of the exhibition and those who are not– to navigate the difficult path between leaving the Academy and facing the machinery of the art world. The guiding principle of Adentro/Afuera is to become a core experience for these artists as they embark on their careers. For el
Chico, the process and end result are a recurring project that allows us to continue our path towards building an inclusive meeting and learning space for everyone who wants to be part of the art ecosystem in Spain. Judging by this second edition of Adentro/Afuera, this ecosystem is becoming stronger and more sustainable.

We are infinitely grateful for the support of Margarita González (Deputy Dean of Culture of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid) and María Arjonilla Álvarez (Coordinator of Cultural Activities of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Seville) and to all the students who have applied for this project.
